An Assignment Model with Divorce and Remarriage

چکیده
We develop a two-sided matching model with positive sorting. Match quality for each couple is revealed ex post and those with poor draws divorce. We show that full commitment and Nash bargaining mechanisms both yield the same non-contingent intra-household allocations. We then apply our framework to an analysis of changes in divorce settlement laws. Changes in laws governing property division in divorce can have temporary effects in their desired direction, but whether or not their longer term impact can be undone in the markets for marriage depends on commitment and the timing of marriage vis-a-vis the legislative policy change. In particular, we find that, if existing couples were able to commit to their allocations prior to marriage, legislative changes that favor a spouse yield their intended benefits only among the poorquality matches. But if existing couples were not able to make pre-marital allocative commitments, then changes in property division rules in divorce impact all couples and generate marital gains for all of the intended beneficiaries. For individuals not yet married, in contrast, changes in property division rules generate offsetting intra-household transfers and lower intra-marital allocations for all future spouses who are the intended beneficiaries. ∗For useful comments and suggestions, we thank Zvi Eckstein, Adrian Masters, Andrew Newman as well as seminar and conference participants at Queen’s University, Koc University, Sabanci University, Tel Aviv University, the 2005 Society for Economic Dynamics meetings and the 2006 AEA Meetings. Modern marriage markets display increasing turnover, with less marriage but more divorce and remarriage. As a consequence, a large number of children live in single parent and step parent households. There is substantial evidence that children of divorced parents do not perform as well as comparable children in intact families. However, there is also some evidence that this gap declines with th...
متن کاملChina’s divorce and remarriage rates: Trends and regional disparities
China’s rapid economic growth and significant increase in divorce and remarriage rates since the early 1980s provide an excellent case for studying the divorce and remarriage patterns in economic transition. Following extremely low divorce and remarriage rates in the 1960s and 1970s, China’s crude divorce rate increased from 0.33 in 1979 to 1.59 in 2007, and the percentage of remarriages among ...

Serial monogamy is likely an adaptive mating strategy for women when the expected future fitness gains with a different partner are greater than expected future fitness with one's current partner. Using interview data from more than 400 women in San Borja, Bolivia, discrete-time event history analyses and random effects regression analyses were conducted to examine predictors of marital dissolu...
متن کاملDivorce, Remarriage and Welfare: A General Equilibrium Approach
Modern marriage markets display increasing turnover, with less marriage but more divorce and remarriage. As a consequence, a large number of children live in single parent and step parent households. We summarize here a general equilibrium approach that allows welfare evaluations. In the absence of children, we show that higher aggregate divorce may raise welfare, because it facilitates remarri...
متن کاملDivorce and remarriage in rural Malawi
The demographic study of nuptiality in African countries is not very developed and often of secondary interest in a discussion of the proximate determinants of fertility. This paper uses unusual marriage history data to examine divorce and remarriage in rural Malawi. Life table probabilities of divorce range from 40 to 65 percent and are among the highest on the continent. An investigation into...
